The Feast of St. Sava

Serbian born St. Sava gave up his title of prince to join an Orthodox monastery.  Later, his father renounced his throne to join his son and together they established the monastery at Chilanari as a house for Serbs.  Civil war prompted his return and St. Sava united his people through religion and education.  He is considered the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and since the 1830’s, the patron saint of Serbian schools and students. At first interred at the Cathedral of the Holy Forty Martyrs in 1235, his remains were moved to southern Serbia two years later; Ottoman Turks dug them up and burned them in 1597 on the main square in Belgrade.  The Temple of St. Sava is built on the place where his holy bones were burned.
