The Feast of St. Anthony the Abbot
At the age of 35, St. Anthony the Abbot moved to an abandoned fort in the desert to live a solitary, prayerful life. After 20 years of solitude, fasting, and manual labor in the service of God, admirers and would-be students descended on him, seeking his spiritual guidance and to be miraculously healed by him. Many followed his example and followed his way in monastic life. His act of burying his friend, St. Paul the Hermit, led to his patronage of gravediggers. In his 105 years of life, he never stopped challenging himself to go one step beyond in his faith.
