The Feast of St. Francis de Sales

Against the wishes of his family, St. Francis de Sales became a priest in response to the call, “Leave all and follow Me”.  In the strong Calvinist Geneva, Switzerland, his gentle manner with everyone led many back to the Church.  His spiritual direction done in writing became the Introduction to the Devout Life, teaching that everyone, not just the clerics, could attain holiness.  He also was the founder of the Order of Visitation.  He died in 1622 and was canonized in 1665.  His writings, recognized for their great value, led him to be declared a Doctor of the Church in 1877.
