Fr. Fennessy will illustrate the many ways art can help us in prayer. It can center us, quiet us, open us to the transcendent, model a prayerful spirit, bring us into the presence of the Lord, set the specific mood for our prayer, and provide the material for what we might call visio divina, spiritual gazing, the visual analog of lectio divina. Many forms of art will be exemplified: from the East and West, from secular and religious art, from landscapes, seascapes, abstract paintings, and three-dimensional pieces.
