Mark is the first and shortest of the four Gospels that we have in written form. Biblical scholars used to frown a bit upon Mark in comparison to the lofty John, the literate Luke and the highly organized Matthew. The almost dismissive view spoke of Mark "as a long Passion Narrative with a short introduction". That view no longer holds among NT scholars, as Mark is now seen as something of a path setter...creating the Gospel written form...and someone with a unique perspective on Jesus, his disciples and the mission.
