Most Reverend Walter A. Hurley, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood at the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 31 inside the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, where he will serve as the principal celebrant of the Mass. The public is invited to attend. The Mass also will be broadcast live on television on WXMI FOX17 and online the diocesan website.

"Bishop Hurley is a faithful servant of Christ who has worked tireslessly for our Church for nearly 50 years," said Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak. "As his episcopal coat of arms indicates, Bishop Hurley has striven to truly 'Serve with gladness.'"

On June 5, 1965 Walter A. Hurley was ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Detroit by Archbishop (later Cardinal) John F. Dearden. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Grand Rapids on June 21, 2005. Bishop Hurley was installed as the eleventh bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids on Aug. 4, 2005 at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. He is one of two bishop emeriti (retired bishops) of the diocese. The other is Bishop Robert Rose.
