The Feast of St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr

St. Agnes lived when Diocletian was determined to wipe out the Church.  She was beautiful which caused suitors to try to marry her, but she refused, saying that her only spouse was a heavenly one to whom she had already promised herself.  This angered the men, and they made known her Christian beliefs.  When brought before a judge she refused marriage, even on the pain of torture.  Sentenced to work in a house of prostitution, she declared that the Lord would not allow her to be violated, and when this proved true, she was sentenced to beheading.  St. Agnes died in 304 and is venerated as a holy martyr.  Her name is mentioned in the Latin Church’s most traditional Eucharistic prayer, the Roman Canon.
