Category: General Assumption Grotto Choir Concert

Sun, 11/24

Blessed John Paul XXIII will be hosting the Assumption Grotto choir directed by Fr. Perrone at St. Mary’s Cathedral on November 24, the Last Sunday of the Liturgical Year. They will be providing a prelude of organ music and then the choir will sing polyphonic sacred music of the Mass. This music will be presented in its intended context, the Solemn High Mass. We will be breaking out all the stops and have the full ritual, including all the various rituals that make it a sacred, solemn, reverent, and transcendent experience. This is a rare event in that the full Solemn High Mass is not done often and even less often with polyphony performed by an accomplished choir.

The purpose of the event is for people to experience and enjoy the Sacred Music of the Church that is so beautiful and so often forgotten.

Vatican II stated in it’s constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: 116. The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services. But other kinds of sacred music, especially polyphony, are by no means excluded from liturgical celebrations, so long as they accord with the spirit of the liturgical action, as laid down in Art. 30.

The event will be on November 24 at 5 pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Lansing.
