Souperbowl of Caring [Parishes throughout Diocese of Grand Rapids]
Souperbowl of Caring
Since 1990, young people have been leading the charge and inspiring others to collect dollars and food weeks leading up to the Big Game. Teaming up with local partners, these groups give 100% of donations to local charities, changing the nation's largest weekend of football into the largest weekend of caring.
On the weekend of Superbowl Sunday, young people and their families stand at the doors to the church at the end of Mass with a large soup pot. Parishioners are asked to donate one dollar. The young people then send the collected donations to their charity organization of choice.
Here’s the real work involved with such a simple event: In the weeks prior, the young people investigate and understand the social causes of hunger and need, as well as, the variety of service organizations in your community or our diocese at large, such as Loaves and Fishes in Muskegon or God’s Kitchen in Grand Rapids. Then the young people come up with a creative way of presenting the learned information to the parish.
